Ludum Dare 32 – Post Mortem

Once again, I took part on Ludum Dare more than 2 weeks ago now.

The game I made is called CurseMan, and you can play it right here.

It involves a man whose only means of defense consist of expelling gianormous inults and curses in the form of comic-style speech bubbles.

Curses that can kill and destroy enemies!

Learning from failure

Last week Sergio and I signed for the “it’s a race” Mini Ludum Dare and he did a pretty good work with his Boost Power, but the same can’t be said about me.  This one has been my first game jam where I tried my best, but at the end I didn’t make it. It’s a shame, but I still think that still worth it.

My try is about a little mole fleeing  from a sure death under the horrific mower of doom. You can help the little mole by smashing your keyboard and evading some obstacles jumping over them. My hours playing Track & Field some years ago have to take some blame for my smashing button addiction.

It’s Jam Season!

Hi everybody!

You probably have noticed by now, but lately we talk a lot about jams. Yeah, we do. Specially me.

But what’s not to like about Jams?, they rock!. They allow you to grow as a developer and they feel like that much needed kick in your ass that just makes you stop making excuses and start making awesome things. They do exactly that and they are great just because of this reason alone (among a lot more!).

Last month I took part on the famous Ludum Dare 30. I already talked about that so let’s not repeat that stuff again here. The important thing is that even though LD30 has already come and go that doesn’t mean there are not any more jams in sight. As a matter of fact, today starts one of the mid season events: Mini Ludum Dare 54!

The rules are a lot less strict but it’s the goal what matters, and for that reason I wanted to take part on it as soon as I heard about it.

But the thing is, that game jams – as many other things in life – are even better when shared with people. For this I decided to tell Antonio about it. He liked the idea so from right now until september 29th we both are going to take part on Mini LD54, and we are both going to try and do our best making some awesome  games.

During this whole process we will be giving out updates, info and almost anything you can think of about our submissions all along their development.

Are you excited? I sure am!

Oh, I almost forgot!, the proposed theme for Mini LD54 is: “It’s a race!”, so I expect lots of racing games, but hopefully we will see a lot of original ideas and some lateral thinking around it 🙂

Well, with that said, stay tuned this weekend and the next week for updates on both games, it’s going to be good!

Ludum Dare: post mortem thoughts from a first timer

As some of you may already know, Ludum Dare is a game programming event-like online challenge that takes place a few times during the year. It gathers a huge amount of game developers from around the globe and gets everybody working on a short game over the course of the weekend.

It has been going on strong for 12 years already and not only amateur game developers take part in it, big industry names like Notch (Minecraft) use to submit a game every now and then, so you could say it’s quite a popular event.

For these and some other reasons I have been wanting to submit a game for it for quite some time, but I didn’t take the leap until the last edition that took place just a month ago.
